Find Your Identity in Christ

Have you ever been called names? I know I have. Maybe no one's been criticizing you lately. Maybe YOU have been the one putting your own self down.

In Daniel 1, when the Jews are deported to Babylon, one of the first things they do is change the names of Daniel and his friends. Identity theft is a common scam today, but in Daniel's case, they desired to steal their identity and faith in God. They were determined to force them to serve pagan gods.

In a She Reads Truth devotion, I saw this chart that depicts the original name and meaning of their names, as well as what their names were changed to. Below is an excerpt from Raechel Myers on it.




Each of the four Jewish exiles were given names by their fathers which relate with the one, true God. But, as a part of their acculturation—in order to make them forget the God of their fathers—the chief official gave them new names that reject their upbringing and instead savor the idolatry of false gods.

Of course translations of the names will vary slightly from commentary to commentary, but look at the wildly intentional similarities! Matthew Henry says the name changes were intended to “wean them from the [religion of their fathers] and instill [that of their conquerors] into them.”

Your identity is not based on financial status, your career, your education, your race, your height, your weight, or anything else. Just like we see vividly in Daniel, it is not about what people call you. It's not even about who you call yourself. It is about who you are in Christ.

In Christ, you are forgiven, loved, treasured. You are a child of the King. You are whiter than snow (Is. 1:18, Ps. 51:7). You are healed and made whole (1 Pt. 2:24, Is. 53:5). You are fearfully and wonderfully made (Ps. 139:14). You are more than a conqueror in Christ (Rom. 8:37).



In Daniel, it is clear that their name changes did not affect their character or their devotion to God. Their minds are made up that they are going to serve God no matter what the cost. Have you?

Thought for the Day: Decide today to focus on who the King of kings says you are, not the opinions of mere human beings made of dust.

THE TRUTH ABOUT PAUL'S THORN



Many people use “Paul’s Thorn” to use against healing. Let's see what the Bible says about it:



 

2 Corinthians 12:7 or because of these surpassingly great revelations. Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me.

*The Bible tells us exactly what Paul’s Thorn was. It was a messenger of Satan, not a sickness.

 

In “Christ the Healer” by F. F. Bosworth, he states, “The expression thorn in the flesh is not once used in either the Old or New Testament EXCEPT as an illustration. The figure of the thorn in the flesh is not in one single instance used in the Bible as a figure of sickness. Every time, the expression was used in the entire Bible, it is specifically stated what the thorn in the flesh was.” Bosworth continues by pointing this out in Numbers 33:55 and Joshua 23:13, as well.


Numbers 33:55 (KJV) But if ye will not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you; then it shall come to pass, that those which yet let remain of them shall be PRICKS IN YOUR EYES, and THORNS IN YOUR sides, and shall vex you in the land wherein ye dwell.


Bosworth points out: “The pricks in the eyes” and “thorns in the sides” of the Israelites were inhabitants of Canaan, not eye trouble or sickness. God was only using an illustration. Again, in Joshua 23:13, the Lord says of the Canaanites, “they shall be… scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes”. Again, the scourges in their eyes and thorns in their sides are the Canaanites.

 

Looking back at 2nd Corinthians 12:7, Paul specifically says that his thorn was a messenger of Satan, sent to buffet him. Bosworth concludes this portion of his sermon on Paul’s Thorn by saying, “Since Paul specifically says that his thornwas a messenger of Satan, sent to buffet him and make trouble for him wherever he went, why should we say it was something else?”

Live Like Jesus


Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.
- 1 John 2:6

Live like Jesus. How did Jesus live? He stayed in communication with our Father, God. He lived according to God's commands. He lived in obedience to God, even unto death. He healed the sick, made the lame walk, the mute talk, the deaf hear, & set the captives free. He raised the dead. Think you can't do that? Think the age of miracles is past? No, Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8, Malachi 3:6). If Jesus was moved with compassion for the sick in the Bible, He is just as moved with compassion for the sick now. He is just as ABLE & WILLING to heal the sick now. However, faith is required. In Nazareth, Jesus could do no miracles because of their lack of faith. If He required faith then, He certainly requires faith now. 

In John 14:12, Jesus said, "Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father." Jesus didn't say just the disciples or the apostles. He said WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM will not only do the same but GREATER works because He is with the Father!!! Glory! Release your faith for your miracle by believing in Jesus Christ who never changes! Many of you already know I can attest to this because Jesus healed me of 2 life-threatening, debilitating diseases! Praise Jesus for healing me and freeing me from that miserable life of limitations! Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits-- who forgives ALL your sins and HEALS ALL YOUR DISEASES (Psalm 103:2-3).

HOW SELFISH WOULD I BE TO KEEP HIM TO MYSELF?

But if I say, "I will not mention His Word or anymore in His Name," His Word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed; I cannot.
- Jeremiah 20:9





Oh, many times I feel like Jeremiah, with a fire shut up in my bones!!! I cannot hold in my love and passion  for the LORD, even if I tried. And WHY WOULD I WANT TO? Salvation comes from His Name alone: Jesus Christ. Only through HIM can all men be saved (who are willing to accept Jesus & live their lives for Him). Only through HIM can we get to Heaven. Oh, my God, with tears in my eyes, I declare with David, "I DELIGHT TO DO YOUR WILL, O MY GOD (Psalm 40:8)!!! 

JESUS is THE WAY, THE TRUTH, and THE LIFE. No one comes to the Father EXCEPT through Him (John 14:6).

This verse is not plural. IT DOES NOT SAY that Jesus is one of the ways, one of the truths, one way of life... It does not say that He is one of the ways to Heaven, contrary to popular belief. The Word of God says Jesus is THE WAY, THE TRUTH, and THE LIFE. NO ONE COMES TO THE FATHER EXCEPT THROUGH JESUS CHRIST. SCRIPTURE SAYS JESUS IS THE ONLY WAY. HE IS THE TRUTH. THE ONLY WAY TO HEAVEN IS THROUGH A RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS CHRIST. Not through religious traditions, but through having an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ. 

********* Note: If you do not have a relationship with Jesus and would like to, it is so simple. Do not be ashamed to want this. It is the only way to Heaven. Right now, wherever you are, you can just say a simple prayer, like this: "Jesus Christ is Lord. God, I believe you sent your Son, Jesus Christ, to the earth to die for my sins & heal me from all sickness & disease & that you raised Jesus from the dead. Please forgive me for my sins. I dedicate my life to you."

That prayer of salvation is only the beginning. Now, get to know God. You can purchase a Bible or begin reading daily in the Bible app (it's free! or at Bible.com). A good place to start is in the Gospel of John (in the New Testament, the 4th book). You can also get involved in a good Bible-based church to learn more. Begin to learn what God asks of you and more about who He is through reading His Word & doing what it says. **************

I couldn't continue with this post without telling you all how to be saved.


WHY WOULD I WANT TO KEEP GOD & HIS WORD TO MYSELF? Through Christ, we can make it into the Beautiful Kingdom of Heaven & forever soak in the presence and majesty of God. In Heaven, there will be no more death, or sorrow, or crying, or pain (Revelation 21:4).. But in Hell, (if you die without a relationship with Jesus), there will be weeping and gnashing of the teeth (Luke 13:28) in a lake of fire forever. Through Jesus, we can be healed from every sickness and every disease (Matt. 4:23, Hebrews 13:8, Malachi 3:6). Through Jesus, the lame can walk, the blind can see, the deaf can hear, the mute can speak. Through Jesus, the captives are set free. Jesus sets us free from all sin, all sickness, all forms of evil bondage!!!! GLORY BE TO GOD!

Oh, God, I would be selfish to keep the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to myself. Oh, I would be selfish to keep the Name above all names locked up deep inside my heart: never to tell of your salvation, healing, forgiveness, mercy, grace, comfort, and love. Never to release the electrifying power that raised Jesus Christ from the grave. Oh, how selfish I would have to be to keep the commands of God to myself. How selfish would I be to not speak in the Name of Jesus & release the salvation, healing, and freedom that comes from Him?? OH, THERE IS POWER IN THE NAME OF JESUS TO BREAK EVERY CHAIN!!!!!!!!! How selfish would I be to remain silent & allow people to go to hell because I refused to speak about Jesus? How selfish would I be to not tell how Jesus saved me, changed me, and healed me & let others perish eternally, to let them be sick & in pain & suffer through this life, to rob them of the comfort that comes from the Holy Spirit? Oh, how selfish would I be not to share my testimony of how Jesus healed me when doctors couldn't? & tell of how Jesus is willing and eager to do the same for others, as well as save them & give the gift of the Holy Spirit & eternal life because GOD DOES NOT SHOW FAVORITISM (Acts 10:34). What He has done for me, He is able and willing to do for you!

LAUGHING WITHOUT FEAR OF THE FUTURE




SHE is CLOTHED with STRENGTH and DIGNITY and LAUGHS WITHOUT FEAR of HER FUTURE.
- Proverbs 31:25

This is difficult when stress, worry, anxiety kick in. I often struggle with putting this into practice: "laughing without fear of my future". But as Women of God, clothed with STRENGTH and DIGNITY, we should be lighthearted. We should not be like a tea kettle, screaming on the inside with constant worry. We have to cast ALL our anxieties on HIM, because He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7). His yoke is easy and His burden is light (Matthew 11:30). Philippians 4:6 says, "BE ANXIOUS FOR NOTHING". When the devil tempts me with worry, I sometimes have to remind myself that God didn't say "Be anxious for nothing EXCEPT.. This, that, or the other [insert your personal situation here]. He said to be anxious for NOTHING. HE HOLDS EVERYTHING IN HIS HANDS. HE cares for our every need. He cares about everything we are going through. Yet He says to His children: BE ANXIOUS FOR NOTHING... because He wants us to give it all to Him. And if we do, we don't have to worry.

Sometimes, we get so caught up in hoping and praying certain things will or will not happen that it becomes our focus. The devil can trick us into yielding to our fears. We get caught up into that state of panic, where we are paralyzed, terror-stricken, unable to entertain any thoughts except the "what-ifs". But instead of giving in, we have to LET GOD BE GOD & DELIVER US FROM ALL OUR FEARS (Psalm 34:4). 

Think of it like passing a basketball to and fro. Your mind is the gym. Let the basketball hoop signify Jesus.  The devil keeps bouncing the basketballs labeled, "fear", "panic", and "anxiety" your way. You've got to see past the devil's evil schemes and look up, toward the Light [the basketball goal: Jesus]. When Satan keeps bombarding you by bouncing all the basketballs to you, you may forget to look up to the place where all the basketballs go: in the hoop [Jesus]. So, no matter how many basketballs almost knock you over, you can only solve the problem by tossing each one into the hoop. All you have to do is keep throwing the balls in the hoop.. Keep bouncing them to JESUS. And DON'T pick them back up.

Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
- James 4:8

God never wants us to live in fear. "God has NOT given us a spirit of fear but of POWER and of LOVE and of a SOUND MIND (2 Timothy 1:7)." He wants us to live in his safety, protection, and perfect peace. "YOU WILL KEEP IN PERFECT PEACE, all who trust in You, whose THOUGHTS ARE FIXED ON YOU" (Isaiah 26:3). We need to read and pray Psalm 91 daily for protection over our families, loved ones, and ourselves. We have to remember that as we dwell in the secret place of the Most High, we abide in the shadow of the Almighty. He protects us & covers us with His feathers. Because we have made the LORD our refuge, NO EVIL WILL BEFALL US; NO PLAGUE WILL COME NEAR OUR DWELLING.

Thank You, Jesus, for pointing all this out to me today, not just for me, but for my fellow Brothers and Sisters in Christ who also need this message.

Too often, we make the negative emotions seem bigger than God by zoning in on them instead of zoning in on HIM.

May we all work to enter that REST IN JESUS.
May we all work to throw all our anxieties to Jesus.
May we all work to take His yoke upon us, for His yoke is easy and His burden is light.
May we be able to laugh easily, without fear of the future.

JESUS UNDERSTANDS




He was despised and rejected ---
a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief.
We turned our  backs on him and looked the other way.
He was despised, and we did not care.
- Isaiah 53:3 (NLT)


Maybe this sounds like the story of your life or at least the story of your current situation. Think no one understands? Think no one cares?

Jesus Christ: the Son of God can relate. This verse strikes me in resemblance to the "loner" type. The lonesome person no one wants to be seen with. Imagine: the only man who ever walked the earth and never sinned: despised, rejected. In other words, Jesus was hated; the social outcast, you might say. All He ever did was save, forgive, heal, and deliver people, yet He was rejected by mankind.

What if you lived during the time the Son of God walked the earth? Maybe you would have avoided him like the plague. Maybe would have felt bad for Him and befriended Him, but only in secret: never to tell your family and friends. Maybe you would have admired Him from a distance, never bold enough to follow Him. Or maybe ---- just maybe you would have dared to believe, to take up your cross and follow Him. Maybe you would have dared to leave behind everything you knew (or thought you knew!) to take this journey with the Son of the Living God; to soak in the beautiful benefits of His presence (peace, joy unspeakable, comfort, healing, freedom); to sit at His feet and drink from the Living Water (the well that never runs dry!); to wash His feet with your tears & wipe them with your hair in repentance for your sins.


I posed this question at first, in a "what if" scenario, to allow your mind to ponder, in wonder what you would have done if you had the blessed opportunity to meet Jesus in person during His earthly life. However, this is very applicable for you now, today. Do you refuse to serve Jesus and give Him your whole heart in fear of what others might think? Or perhaps because you aren't willing to let Jesus free you from your bondage to sin? Or do you serve Jesus quietly  -- fearing what your family and friends might think? Or do you from time to time ponder the possibility of following Jesus, never bold enough to commit? Or do you live boldly for the Lord Jesus, beaming as a shining, brilliant light for Him? Following your loving Savior, falling more deeply in love with Him each day? Do you courageously live your life according to God's Word (1 John 5:3, Psalm 119:9)?

DO YOU DARE TO BELIEVE IN JESUS, who remains the same: yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8, Malachi 3:6)? He still freely forgives all who repent & turn to Him (Titus 2:11-12, Ezekiel 33:11, Acts 2:38, Isaiah 55:6-7, Isaiah 1:18, 1 Timothy 2:8, Romans 10:9 & 13, 2 Peter 3:9, Isaiah 30:18), heals every sickness and every disease, because He is moved with compassion for the sick (Matt. 4:23), makes the lame walk, the blind see, the deaf talk, the mute hear, delivers all who are oppressed of the devil (Acts 10:38).


I challenge you today to let nothing stand in your way of serving Jesus with all of your heart. Jeremiah 29:13 says, "You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart". I challenge you to move as far away from the torment of fiery hell as possible by moving as close to Jesus as you can possibly get. 1 John 5:3 says, "In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome". I can assure you that if you fall in love with God continually and make it your focus to please Him, His commands absolutely are not burdensome. He helps us keep them (1 Corinthians 10:13). Besides, what is easier? To live this life any way you want and burn in hell forever? Or to live this life according to God's Word and live in eternal bliss with Jesus in Heaven forever?

Would you dare to believe? Would you dare to live your life for Jesus out loud, unashamed (Romans 1:16)? Would you dare to believe in His willingness, eagerness, and desire to perform miracles and healing just as He did then? Would you believe on Him to heal your broken heart, your broken life? Would you be courageous enough to have that child like faith He yearns for you to have (Matthew 18:3)? I challenge you to read/re-read Isaiah 53 & let Him minister to you. Let these words about Jesus resonate within your soul, as you read about what He did to save you and heal you.

Prayer: 
Father, in the name of Jesus, let every person who reads this be changed. Impress upon them strongly to live the Gospel and speak your truth with GREAT BOLDNESS, UNASHAMED. Let them feel the awe, wonder, amazement, majesty of Your Presence, Jesus. Let us shamelessly be "doers of Your Word" & not hearers only, because we know according to James 1:22, we are fooling ourselves if we listen to Your Word & do not do what it says. Let us proudly serve you, because you had no shame in taking on the full weight of all our sins & sicknesses, so that we may be free from sin, sickness & every evil (Psalm 91) in the name of Jesus Christ. Thank You, Father, for your infinite love, mercy, and grace. Thank You for all that You are: Savior, Healer, Provider, Prince of Peace, and so much more.

Jesus Carries His Children CLOSE to HIS HEART




He tends his flock like a shepherd: 
He gathers the lambs in HIS ARMS 
and CARRIES THEM CLOSE TO HIS HEART;
he gently leads those that have young. 
- Isaiah 40:11 NIV


WOW! This Scripture blows me away. These Words from God reach into the deepest parts of my heart. As children of God, we are lambs, the flock of Jesus (the Good Shepard). This verse informs us that JESUS CHRIST gathers US into HIS ARMS. Let that sink in. Let His love, peace, and comfort wash over you and consume you like a tidal wave. 

He gathers all of His Children, and gently carries us through the storms in our lives. He shields us from the pain, from the crashing waves, from the stormy nights. Weeping may endure for a night, but JOY comes in the MORNING (Psalm 30:5). Keep in mind, though, that He is with you during those weepy nights. The Word of God says that He counts the tears of the righteous. The next line in this verse says that Jesus carries His Children CLOSE TO HIS HEART. How wonderful it is to know how deeply loved we are! How wonderful it is to close your eyes and picture JESUS carrying you close to HIS HEART... And He really is. He cares for your every hurt, want, and need. God always makes a way for His people, even if He has to part the Red Sea to do so (Exodus 14). The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who,are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). Oh, His love for us is so deep, wide, long! May we have the power to grasp the depth and height and width of His infinite love!! 

"...And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. "

So whether you're going through a storm or in a happy season that you never want to end, remember that God Himself is carrying you close to His Heart: today, tomorrow, and forevermore! His all-consuming Love never ends! His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:23).

JESUS IS COMING BACK: Are you ready or will you get left behind?

"But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father."

- Jesus in Mark 13:32 (NIV)


This verse clearly tells us that NO ONE knows the DAY or the HOUR that JESUS is COMING BACK, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but ONLY GOD THE FATHER. What we do know for sure is this: Jesus is definitely coming back. No doubt, whatsoever. It is what the Bible tells us. The day of the LORD will come like a thief in the night (1 Thessalonians 5:16, 2 Peter 3:10, Revelation 16:15).


However, we do not know when the LORD's coming will be. So what can we do? We find the answer in verse 33 of Mark chapter 13.


"Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come"

- Jesus in Mark 13:33


We are supposed to "be on guard"! We are supposed to "be alert". We are to be prepared for HIS COMING! Are you ready? Are you living for Jesus? Are you living in a way that is pleasing to Him? Or will you get left behind when Jesus comes to get His people?


We are to seek God daily. Stay in the Word of God (the Bible). Read the Scriptures every day. It is vital to your walk as a Christian. Regardless of how much you know of the Bible or how much you have read, we have to "feed" on the Word. I love the way Kenneth and Gloria Copeland put it once, "Just as the physical body cannot go for days on memory of it's last meal (physical food), your spirit cannot go for days on memory of your spiritual food (last Bible reading, memorized verses, etc.). That's not verbatim, but that is something I read from them once.


If you just don't have that desire yet to feed on the Word daily, ask God to give you "spiritual tastebuds" for His Word (I learned this in a devotional once). Begin reading the Bible daily. First, it will be something you do daily in obedience to God, but as you persevere to keep this time with God, you will begin to crave it and enjoy it thoroughly. You will look forward to it. You will be refreshed by His Word. It will a relaxing learning experience for you. God will meet you there. He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him (Hebrews 11:6).



If you have never received Christ, you can do so now. Regardless of you past, you can start over right now. You can give your life to Jesus. "For everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved" (Romans 10:13). This means you make a commitment to serving God through His Son, Jesus Christ.  This means you begin to read His Word. You begin to get to know just who He is (through His Word and as He reveals Himself to you). You strive to live in ways that please Him. The first step though, is just coming to Him. Afterwards, He will help you, show you, and guide you in the way He wants you to live, which is ALWAYS according to what THE BIBLE SAYS! If you are just learning about God, you can begin in the Gospel of John (after Mark, in the New Testament).


Salvation: In the Bible


Here are a couple of things the Bible says about salvation:

That if you CONFESS WITH YOUR MOUTH, "Jesus is Lord," and BELIEVE IN YOUR HEART that GOD RAISED HIM FROM THE DEAD, YOU WILL BE SAVED.

- Romans 10:9 (NIV, emphasis, mine)


For it is with your HEART that you BELIEVE and are JUSTIFIED, and it is with YOUR MOUTH that you CONFESS and are saved.

- Romans 10:10 (NIV, emphasis, mine)


Also, as mentioned above EVERYONE WHO CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED (Romans 10:13). Not one, not a few, not some, but EVERYONE who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.


"For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people."

- Titus 2:11 (NIV)


The grace of GOD offers salvation to ALL PEOPLE! Jesus is the way the truth, and the life (John 14:6). No one comes to the Father, except through Him (John 14:6, continued). If you would like to give your life to Christ, you can do this:

1) Confess that you are a sinner. Ask for forgiveness of your sins

2) Acknowledge that Jesus is the Son of God and came to die on the cross to offer us salvation through Him, as well as healing (John 3:16-17, 1 Peter 2:24)

3) Ask Jesus to come into your heart. Surrender your life to Him.

**Now, begin reading the Bible daily and living according to what the Bible says, as you learn to do so :)

Back to the return of Jesus Christ, my LORD and Savior! I hope He is yours, too. If He is not yet, He is willing to be, if you just call on His name and surrender your life to Him. No one knows when the LORD is coming back for His people, as pointed out in the verse above. Here is more of the Scripture:


v. 34) "It's like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch.


35) Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back---whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. 36) If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. 37) What I say to you, I say to everyone: 'Watch!' "

The Day of the LORD

(See 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11)


According to 1 Thessalonians,


verse 2: "for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night."


verse 3: "While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape."



For those of you who are following Jesus:

verse 4):  "But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. 5) You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 6) So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and SOBER.  9) For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Those of us who follow Jesus have nothing to fear. The coming of the LORD is soon. Those of us who are followers of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ will go to Heaven with Jesus when He comes to get us :)
